This is not latch hook (with acrylic yarn ... shudder) that you see at craft stores; I did do that back in elementary school, btw. I use as is wools, hand dyed and some up-cycled from the days when I obsessively shopped at thrift stores.

I've made rugs on and off over the years and have a nice pile of unfinished projects. I finished this one on New Year's Eve. It's hooked with 100% wool strips (in size 8.5 for you hookers) on linen foundation. I'm interested to see how it holds up in front of our fireplace. It's -2 degrees out right now and we use the fireplace ALL the time in the winter.

I love working with wool and plan to design more of my own patterns this year

Simply Leaves rug detail approx 3'x5'

6x9 gouache on watercolor paper

View from Crested Butte, CO

What does this have to do with Gouache? If you didn't follow along there are pictures from October on my Instagram at @lisahutart

- We did a 5 week camping trip in January/February to Florida, right before the COVID shutdown. After restrictions were lifted, we took some short camping trips to Telluride, Crested Butte, Fruita and Aspen through the summer and fall

- I raced to Guiry's Art Supplies and stocked up on paint as everyone else was hoarding toilet paper

- "Life" taught me to never take anything for granted and appreciate everything!

About the Art

Yesterday morning I looked out the window at the snowy trees with Table mountain in the background. Table mountain burned during the wildfire, but I painted the aspen in the background as they used to be. I'll let you know in the next post why I'm painting in Gouache.

6x9 Gouache on 140# watercolor paper

Wishing you Love, Happiness and Laughter this year. New Year - New Projects!

Happy New Year!

In January of 2018 - I posted oh ... about 20 or so New Year's resolutions - so full of energy, but still knowing I would only accomplish, 5 maybe? It was more like 3.

In January of 2019 - I didn't even bother to post goals, just my gratitude and affection for you all. And a little goal to work on "balance". Hmmm.

Here's January of 2020 - and I'm currently suffering with a 4 week cold/sinus infection that just won't go away. I blame it on doing too much and not having a strong immune system to fight anything off at the end of a busy year. So, I'm striving to do even less in 2020. Less quantity and more quality. Hopefully that means you'll see more art ... it makes sense in my head.

2019 was good year for us. My husband semi-retired in June which allowed us time to travel in our camper. The highlight was a 40 day camping trip across the PNW and visiting 7 national parks.
My son & his fiancé moved back to Denver.
My daughter graduated from college and also moved back to Colorado.
I only made half the mittens that I did in 2018, but still raised a lot of $$ for the Alzheimer's Association. My art shows went well and sales are keeping me in paint.

Here's to an artful year wishing you all good health, happiness and kindness all around.

Always with Gratitude, LisaLisa Huthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12834725844160842192noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6217039455695098089.post-79926021575699518522019-08-15T20:23:00.003-06:002019-08-15T20:23:45.656-06:00Long Road Trip: Montana and WyomingWe love Montana, even though it's raining. Since it was raining in Glacier we headed south towards Missoula. We had some bad weather; lightning, rain and wind so traveling was slow. We camped on the Clark Fork River at Beavertail Hill State Park. It was a nice spot and we finally scored cherries at a stand along Flathead Lake. Fishing was a bust for Meriwether with the rain. We had an unplanned stop at Lewis & Clark Caverns State Park where he got a mountain bike ride in. We camped south of Livingston, MT at a KOA. I was desperate to do laundry and we had a nice dinner in Livingston, at a real restaurant. Then we spent the next 3 days traveling in and around Yellowstone putting mileage in on the truck. The second bear sighting was yesterday and we got up at 4 am today to head to Lamar Valley to see wolves. We did see one but it was too far away for a good photo.
Occasionally, it's a new sign made to look old but easy to tell the difference; the old ones are actually falling apart.
On another note, several of my friends have expressed envy over my road trip. Below are a few highlights to make you appreciate your spacious home. Note: I am either freezing (like in Frozen), or burning up (Jack, Jack from the Incredibles) as illustrated below. Likely has nothing to do with camping but just thought I'd mention it.

- People are nice everywhere; except for the guy who flipped us off last week for driving too slow.

- A squirrel vomited on my picnic table, Berries-in-Goo, A la carte.

- I saw a mouse, that always ruins my day.

- Then I saw a dead bird. This was the first day I wanted to go home.

- You can't mind when leaves and pine needles keep falling in your food when cooking outdoors.

- Once, an ant crawled out from my salad, I flicked him away and kept eating. Really.

- I'm getting a little tired of dump stations - they are gross.

- I finally know the difference between potable and non-potable water.
You don't want to mix those up.

- I Kayaked for a whole 10 minutes and have a blister on my thumb the size of a quarter. Weak.

- A bag of flour exploded in the camper.

- I baked chocolate chip cookies in the camper oven.
It took 3 hours because I could only bake 4 cookies at a time.

- I just battled 2 wasps in the camper. Roadkill, don't even want to talk about it.

Overall a great trip, still have a couple weeks to go. You just can't let the little things get you down.
Bear!

We have a game in the car kind of like duck, duck, goose. Ed drives, I have the camera, lens cap off, ready to go and if I'm not actively watching out the window (on the phone, fetching snacks, etc.) Ed yells Barn! If it's on my side, his hand and finger are fluttering dangerously close to my face. So as you can imagine, I have a lot of really bad photos but also reference shots for lots of barn paintings. And sometimes I miss them. Then we discuss if he yelled Barn! too late or if I'm too slow. We've been in the car a long time.

Only once has he said "Don't you have enough pictures of barns yet?".

So now about the bear. We are camping on the west side of Glacier NP and spent Saturday on the east side looking for bears. Finally, in the afternoon we got lucky. A flock of humans along the side of the road had already spotted her. Many people drove up, snapped a picture then on they went.

A couple rangers had to manage the people, as people are idiots when it comes to wildlife. Patience paid off for us. We stood in the drizzling rain and watched this beautiful black bear pop in and out of the bushes for over an hour, grazing huckleberries on the hillside. She zig zagged across the hill and eventually came closer and closer to the road. So fun watching her through binoculars and Meriwether's scope - the photos don't do it justice. She was getting very close to the road (and us), the rangers were thinking she wanted to cross the road and tried moving people back, some tween started screaming she was scared (in a fake loud dramatic fashion) ... one photographer blatantly walked past where the ranger told us not to go, crossed the road and was inching up the hillside towards the bear, so the ranger had to chase him, then the crowd proceeds to walk where they told us not to ... sigh ... time for us to leave.

It was a great hour. Thanks, bear.Lisa Huthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12834725844160842192noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6217039455695098089.post-52877772442507042872019-08-05T18:29:00.000-06:002019-08-05T18:29:13.418-06:00Long Road Trip: A surprising Twisp!Today's Twist in Twisp. Say that 10 times. It all started with a sign in Winthrop, WA that said "RV Parking". So we parked, had lunch along the river and wandered up to town. It was a cute town and I found handmade wool rugs from a local artist (Katie Swanson) made from Pendleton wool selvages. My heart was beating a mile a minute. Hand woven wool rugs. Reasonable prices. I now own a new rug. She told us all about Twisp, another town down the road. In between there was a pretty campground right along the river so we stopped ... and stayed for 4 days.

Meriwether was in heaven, doing all the things we came for. Biking, fly fishing, SUP and Kayaking.
He got a ride from a fellow camper that dropped him off a few miles up the road so he could float back to our camp spot. Camping along the Methow River was perfect.

He needed longer than the record breaking 15 minutes I spent out on the water with him. I got a blister on my thumb, so ya know ... back to painting I go. The next day I dropped him off 8 miles up the road on the SUP for a 3 hour adventure.

I painted, blogged and hung out by the river. Even had time to break out the acrylics that I brought and do a little experimental art.
We camped here 2 nights, drove where we could and got some great photos. Now the challenge is painting that bright teal water.
My favorite was the Purple Haze Lavender Farm. It's a Harvest Host site - we didn't have time to stay overnight but if you are camping with HH this place looked fantastic.
There was lots for me to paint here, but a little too far from Rainier to stay longer.
Saturday morning in Rainier NP we found a walkup spot at Cougar Rock CG and stayed 2 nights. I met Debby to paint the next day and picked Ed (uh, Meriwether) up from a 44 mile bike ride across the park. It was so nice to see Debby - it's so much more fun to paint with a buddy and catchup on her travels.
So Day 11, we camped in Willapa Bay. Loved the camp site, we could walk 200 yards behind us to a beach. We watched the tide and the sunset. I collected a few pieces of seaglass, shells and rocks. We saw many oyster shells and then did a little research and realized what a big industry it is here. Google taught me all about oyster harvesting. Ya know, if I didn't have Google, I'd probably travel with an encyclopedia. ha.

Meriwether? Well, we are listening to "Undaunted Courage" about the Lewis & Clark expedition (I highly recommend it) and since my husband is an explorer at heart, reads maps for fun ... we shall now refer to him as Meriwether. You can too.

Off to Port Angeles, WA our staging area for fun around Olympic NP. So far we've camped in maybe 12 camp spots. Even though we set up pretty quickly; it's still a pain making sure everything in the camper is rigged so all our gear doesn't tumble around like it's in a life size rock polisher. I have a collection of screws that appear on the floor every few days. Occasionally one forgets to move a box of crackers or lock a drawer then it's a fun surprise to open the camper door and see what was let loose. Thank goodness we haven't spilled the Oreos yet.

So, 4 nights near Port Angeles allowed Meriwether to do a couple of bike rides, a short hike in the park, driving around taking pictures, painting, dinner at a brewery, laundry, grocery shopping and a ferry ride over to Victoria, BC. I really wanted to visit Butchart Gardens, but we only had one day in Canada.
Victoria is known as the Flower City and very well deserved

The gardens at the Empress hotel were amazing, and the best part was their beehive with a surrounding flower garden. Had lunch on the veranda with bread and honey of course. It's wonderful that so many places are intentionally helping our honeybees thrive and survive. We also stumbled upon a french patisserie called La Roux in Chinatown ... honestly ... it was fantastic. We found Victoria charming.
Like every single spot we've been in the past few weeks, we wish we had more time and plan to come back again one day.
We've had perfect weather, chilly at night and 70 during the day. We are trying to find camping as we go, fun for Ed but nerve wracking for me.

I'm using a variety of apps; national and state parks, allstays, hipcamp, compendium, harvest host, and google maps to find spots and there was nothing available. Tricky with slow and intermittent cell service too.

So, in the afternoon we figured we'd start at Horsfall campground near North Bend, OR and work our way up the coast. A helpful ranger got us a spot right away at Wild Mare campground - told us it would fit the trailer just fine since it was meant for campers with horses. Sometimes winging it works.
Such a pretty drive but so many places we didn't get to pull over,

because if you don't see a large area to turn the trailer around ... you need to roll on by

Farther up the coast we headed to Jessie M. Honeyman State Park. I lucked out and reserved the only spot available online, for one night. We wished we could have stayed longer, it was fun hiking up sand dunes right behind our camper. I tried sketching but the wind pelted me with sand (and my art, paints, etc.) so I gave up and headed back to the camper.

We did stop at a couple of lighthouses, and saw some stunning views - but we missed a lot of them for lack of seeing a space to pull the camper in and turn it around.

Then we camped at our 2nd harvest host, the Blue Heron French Cheese Company. This place was crowded with a dozen campers allowed to camp in a field next to the store. Hey, it's free. The place was crowded and an ok spot to stop for the night; but I'm appreciating gravel/concrete pads when you are trying to get the camper level. In a field, it's not always ideal. Luckily, no rain so didn't wake up sunk in the grass.
Day 3 and 4: Drive to Castle Rock State Park in Idaho. Google maps gave me an alternate route, only an extra 10 minutes about an hour away from our camp spot. Sometimes Google lies. What google didn't tell us; it was a washboard dirt road for 27+ miles so we rattled a few screws loose in the camper. Literally.
Cleaned my pastels and right before we left realized I left the lids in Denver. Not something you can just run out and pick up - foam padded lids to my plein air box. So, I've got the pastels in other boxes but still needed to bring this to attach to my easel and tripod. Not efficient.

Day 6: Drove through Bend, OR and would love to come back and spend more time here. A pretty park in downtown, a real art gallery, cute downtown area with shops, etc. After a brewery and dinner stop, headed south to be as close to Crater Lake as possible. I have 20 or so paintings in my head just hoping for time to get them on paper one day.

Day 7: Spent the day at Crater Lake National Park. Ed did a 33 mile ride around the rim and I got to paint. We did a short 1.6 mile hike up to Watchman Lookout for even more incredible photos.
Like most spots, it was empty and beautiful at 8 am but by noon packed with tourists, kids, buses and way too many people.
My husband and I are traveling with our 24" camper across the Northwest. He's biking and I'm painting. Actually we are doing a lot of driving, camping, cooking, seeing stuff, googling stuff (when we have service) and taking photos. The only bad thing about camping is slow cell service, no wifi - but it's also the great thing about camping. I don't realize how much I just google stuff ... until I can't.

Starry Hollow Ranch - Utah

Day 1: We camped at Green River Campground in Dinosaur National Monument, it was really pretty along the river - but 100 degrees. No hookups, so I'm already grateful for the generator Ed bought last minute because all women in their mid 50's deserve AC, camping or no camping.

The drive was beautiful; fields of yellow Mules Ears, paintbrush and just a few lupine.
I managed one sketch but the mosquitos were relentless, I gave up and ran for the camper. We visited the Josie Morris cabin (how interesting was she! - She was married 5 times and hung out with some bad cowboys - read about her here).

Day 2: we camped at a Harvest Host - a network of farms, wineries and museums that let you camp for free in a boondocking kind of way. Then you repay the kindness by purchasing from their farm, store or winery. Starry Hollow Ranch, a private farm outside of Salt Lake City was a beautiful spot, 22 acres with views all around. There was a barn, chickens, goats, alpacas, horses, dogs ... a few of my favorite things :) Genny was a great host, we toured the garden and I learned a lot about chicken eggs. We had a quick stop, I managed one painting of their view. I have several sketches not completed yet, lots of photos and good intentions.
SAM is always a great mixture of reconnecting with friends, meeting other artists, connecting with complete strangers ... worrying about the weather and happily selling art.

Congrats to Christina V. for winning a free painting in my drawing. Who says you can't get free stuff anymore?

On Saturday night I attended the Alzheimer's Association Art Auction, it's the biggest art weekend for me of the year, every year. After a long week; on Sunday night I fell asleep at 8:30 pm and slept for 10 straight hours. Awesome.

So, about this painting ... it still needed a little work and was in a corner of the studio (kind of forgotten to be honest) but on a whim late Saturday night I decided to finish it and bring it to the booth on Sunday.
One buyer looked at it and thought she liked it positioned horizontal - rather than vertical. It surprisingly worked and the name changed from Spring Awakening to Turntable. All I could think of was turning the tables or looking at something with a new perspective. Sometimes I beat myself up for being so abstract and loose but this time it magically worked.

Next time something doesn't feel complete, or I'm not seeing it quite right, I'm going to do a little 90 degree rotation and see what happens. If you see me out plein air painting and I suddenly start spinning around, you'll know why. Thanks "L" for your fresh perspective and purchase. It was certainly meant to be. Have a happy week everyone.
I was deciding that I was going to paint no matter what.

I've always been an artist, but spent years wanting to be a painter and it took a lot to finally make that happen. The leap was to just do it and letting go of what might or might not happen (lots has happened, by the way).

It's always made me happy when I look at it on my studio wall. I glanced up at it tonight and decided it was time to pass the explosion of color on. I hope someone else likes this bright abstracted cloudy work. If not, it may go back on my studio wall so I can reflect on my creative journey just a little bit more.

No expectations.

I have lots of new work; "bin" priced stuff at $25-$50, original cards for under $10 and many pastels and several large acrylic and oils. More work than I can fit in the booth as usual.

This year I'm sharing a booth with my friend Robyn. Check out her stuff here. She is accomplished in a variety of mediums and will be showing her beautiful animal portraits, representational still life and landscape oil paintings ... and fun contemporary acrylic pours. Basically, what I don't do - she does. Between the two of us, it's like having 7 different styles. Ha! Please stop by to say hello.
Spring is a little late this year, it's supposed to snow in a couple of days up here at 8,600 feet. The aspen have barely budded out and the mountain peaks look like February. Trail Ridge is not open this weekend. Mount Baldy is covered in white and peeking behind these trees that I sketched from Grand Lake Lodge this morning.

I've never noticed that when aspen trees bud out, the base is bright red and the leaves electric green, I'm going to watch them this week and see how fast they open.
I mean, I always liked being outside as a kid - probably because our parents said "go outside and play and don't come home until it's dark". It was the 70's. I was sitting outside drawing back when I was in single digits. Some things never change. So, I guess I'll credit my mom for my love of nature - thanks Mom.
Two posts in a week after being absent from blogging for months? I'm on a roll.

Below is another painting that I am donating to the Alzheimer's Association Art Auction. See yesterday's blog post so I don't bore you with all the details again.

The second photos are aspen paintings done by MIM artist Katie Dimmer titled "Hiking through the Aspens". Hiking and aspen trees are some of my favorite things so it was an easy choice to paint something to go with Katie's art. Her "story" recorded on the back of her art touched my heart too; memories of running a family bakery and also reminding me that a person's love of family says it all.

Since I've been painting plein air I've grown to appreciate all seasons, not just fall. The green buds are so vibrant in the spring and winter holds so many hues of white, purple and blue, and hints of every single color in the rainbow. Painting a gray tree trunk is anything but gray and harder than it looks. Get outside and take some time to sit under a tree. Look at the complicated lines in a leaf, stare at the gray trunk and see how many colors you see. Bob Ross may have had the answer to it all, painting happy little trees over and over. I want to do that.
In case you are a new reader, you can visit my website here or the Alzheimer's Association here to read about this fantastic program and fundraising art auction. My regular readers, you've all heard about it many times before. Stop yawning.

So, this year I was inspired to do my pairing (called a pairing, because they will be sold together) with a little watercolor done by MIM artist Rena, titled Pre-storm Brilliance. First, it's a sweet little painting that I fell in love with. Second, I immediately could picture a much larger version with a very calm sky ... more like post-storm.

Art is so much more than painting a tree - I reflected on Rena's painting and thought a lot about the storm of a dementia diagnosis and all the chaos and dark clouds that follow. Normally, I don't "copy" a painting but I loved everything about this work and wanted to make a much larger version of Rena's tree - as a reminder - that after each storm there is a time of peace with a big calm sky.
A reminder to myself too.

So, I hope someone else feels the peacefulness I tried to paint into this work - just in case you also
are in the middle of a storm.

I had big plans for yesterday. My house guests left (5 adult children & 2 <strike>dogs</strike> energetic puppies) and I figured I'd clean, do laundry and do my first sketch or painting for the year. Sadly, my phone has been dying for months and finally wouldn't hold a charge. So, I got a new phone.

In theory you set the new iPhone next to the old one and it all magically transfers. But actually that means hours of transferring data, resigning into apps and generally figuring it out. Multiple devices, out of memory, updating software, etc. Google helped. Ed helped. It's all good now.
Then the computer crashed this morning.

So, I'm not listing my million and 1 goals and resolutions because I'll only keep a handful. Really, I missed the first few days and still have more xmas stuff to put away. That's OK, I'm not starting the new year beating myself up. Cheers to an artful and balanced year ahead!
I'm always trying to slow down but there is so much I want to do! Life is also filled with losses of loved ones, health scares and enough not so good things to make it easy to be grateful for all that we have.

I'm always full of goals and New Year Resolutions - it's too late to write them all out, they are still jumbled in my head anyway. I still have 4 extra human visitors + 2 dogs visiting and after tomorrow I will get back to my "art life". I'm posting dog photos on my instagram this week and confusing art collectors. I will do the 30 paintings in 30 days for January - but think they will all be cards. I have so many reference photos that I want to paint and sketch.

The owl is hooting behind my house this evening and I picture him softly wishing farewell to 2018 and anticipating what the new year will bring. Maybe he's just hooting that it's darn cold out.

Anyway, I truly hope for joy, peace, kindness, balance and good health for all my family and friends. See you in the new year! Lisa
Usually we are in the snowy mountains; but this year Ed and I are celebrating Thanksgiving at Universal Studios, Florida with our kids. Then, Ed and I decided to make it a road trip. You know, we like to drive. We've seen the largest bottle of ketchup in Illinois, a car on fire in Kansas, more road kill than I can count, visited the Great Smoky Mountains and Congaree National Parks (21 National Parks down, 39 to go), and had a nice evening of music and overpriced watery drinks in Nashville, TN.

Road trips are fun.

Now, we've stopped to see friends in historic Charleston, SC. The architecture, galleries, churches, graveyards and wrought iron are fascinating. I wish I had a month to hang out downtown and read about the history and paint those buildings. Oh, the art galleries - superb. The food ... mmm. I'm pretty sure the food is not going to be good at the Wizarding World of Harry Potter but we'll suffer for the rides.

Last, thank you to all my friends and art collectors that purchased mittens, pillows and art during my last couple of shows. I so very much appreciate your monetary purchases but even more - your encouragement, comments and support on this art journey I've taken. Yes, I'm feeling very, very grateful.

Or maybe the best planner, depends on how you look at it. I started a fundraising page for the Longest Day - Alzheimer's Association for 2019 - Early Bird! Really, I failed at mitten sales for my 2018 Longest Day page - but that's because who buys mittens in the summer?

Time to find an wifi booster for the camper. It's been great doing this 30 day painting/mitten sale and thank you so very much to everyone who purchased and helped me raise funds for Alzheimer's. Thanks.
Not your fault but dang, the pressure.
Crickets.

Creative slowdown. At least I haven't experienced that with painting. I mean sometimes they don't turn out, actually lots of times, but I'm always inspired to paint and have so many ideas of what I want to paint I'll never get to it all. I'm off to Durango all next week, hope for good weather. Our camper "RV Gogh" is packed and ready to "Go".
