New Year's Eve 2018

The last 2 months of 2018 was a whirlwind of travel, shows, sales (yay!), decorating, entertaining and watching life fly by. I'm always trying to slow down but there is so much I want to do! Life is also filled with losses of loved ones, health scares and enough not so good things to make it easy to be grateful for all that we have.

I'm always full of goals and New Year Resolutions - it's too late to write them all out, they are still jumbled in my head anyway. I still have 4 extra human visitors + 2 dogs visiting and after tomorrow I will get back to my "art life". I'm posting dog photos on my instagram this week and confusing art collectors. I will do the 30 paintings in 30 days for January - but think they will all be cards. I have so many reference photos that I want to paint and sketch.

The owl is hooting behind my house this evening and I picture him softly wishing farewell to 2018 and anticipating what the new year will bring. Maybe he's just hooting that it's darn cold out.

Anyway, I truly hope for joy, peace, kindness, balance and good health for all my family and friends. See you in the new year! Lisa

21 Down - 39 to Go

I'm currently in Charleston, SC and enjoying November in a non-traditional way. Usually we are in the snowy mountains; but this year Ed and I are celebrating Thanksgiving at Universal Studios, Florida with our kids. Then, Ed and I decided to make it a road trip. You know, we like to drive. We've seen the largest bottle of ketchup in Illinois, a car on fire in Kansas, more road kill than I can count, visited the Great Smoky Mountains and Congaree National Parks (21 National Parks down, 39 to go), and had a nice evening of music and overpriced watery drinks in Nashville, TN.

Road trips are fun.

Now, we've stopped to see friends in historic Charleston, SC. The architecture, galleries, churches, graveyards and wrought iron are fascinating. I wish I had a month to hang out downtown and read about the history and paint those buildings. Oh, the art galleries - superb. The food ... mmm. I'm pretty sure the food is not going to be good at the Wizarding World of Harry Potter but we'll suffer for the rides.

Last, thank you to all my friends and art collectors that purchased mittens, pillows and art during my last couple of shows. I so very much appreciate your monetary purchases but even more - your encouragement, comments and support on this art journey I've taken. Yes, I'm feeling very, very grateful.

Be Kind - Be Thoughtful - Be Genuine
Most of all - Be Thankful

Happy Thanksgiving!

Early Bird

I am the worst procrastinator ever. Or maybe the best planner, depends on how you look at it. I started a fundraising page for the Longest Day - Alzheimer's Association for 2019 - Early Bird! Really, I failed at mitten sales for my 2018 Longest Day page -  but that's because who buys mittens in the summer?

Thanks to you all for following my daily paintings in September and purchasing mittens and art to support Alzheimer's. You can see my Longest Day page here.

If you purchase mittens you can donate directly or I take checks, cash, PayPal or credit cards. No, I do not take Venmo because I absolutely cannot make up ONE MORE SINGLE PASSWORD. People my age understand, my daughter does not. Please save the date:

30 in 30 Day 30: Last One!

I'm camping in Durango this week and huddled on a rock near the campground office looking for 2 little bars of wifi. Time to find an wifi booster for the camper. It's been great doing this 30 day painting/mitten sale and thank you so very much to everyone who purchased and helped me raise funds for Alzheimer's. Here is my last one!

30 in 30 Day 29: Writer's Block

As soon as a few friends said they loved reading my blog - writer's block. Thanks.
Not your fault but dang, the pressure.

Crickets.

Creative slowdown. At least I haven't experienced that with painting. I mean sometimes they don't turn out, actually lots of times, but I'm always inspired to paint and have so many ideas of what I want to paint I'll never get to it all. I'm off to Durango all next week, hope for good weather. Our camper "RV Gogh" is packed and ready to "Go".

30 in 30 Day 28: Time Flies

I'm almost at the end of my daily painting challenge. I didn't expect to end up with so many pen and ink watercolors, but they go pretty fast and I always seem to be short on time. I had hoped to start back with oil painting this month but that didn't happen. A friend mentioned Christmas just today, yikes! Time flies for sure.

30 in 30 Day 27: Small Moments

This morning, a large hawk landed right behind my house. That's not unusual, I see hawks often but this one was very close, in a low spot on a tree. I was so tempted to run and get my camera but knew that the right thing to do was to stop, breathe and just watch. It's repeated screech was haunting and beautiful and it stuck around quite awhile. Long enough for me to remember to appreciate the small moments in this big, sometimes overwhelming world.

30 in 30 Day 26: Simply Lavender

I love painting in lavender fields. I don't know if lavender was always this popular but it seems that wherever I travel I manage to find a field or two and even have a few plants at home and close to home at Denver Botanic Gardens - Chatfield. Today was all about the purple ... purple mittens,
purple lavender. Simple.

30 in 30 Day 25: Sharp Objects

You never know how important thumbs are until you stab one with an X-acto blade. A bandaid fixed the problem but then I avoided using my sore thumb most of the afternoon. I have got to quit doing this blog so late at night when I'm tired - I find it difficult to form complete sentences. Yes, 8:30 pm is late for those of us with insomnia that get up before 5 am.

The below pastel is the East Inlet in Rocky Mountain National Park just above Adams Falls.

30 in 30 Day 24: Cookies & Pop-tarts

Today, I had several errands in the late morning and wasn't finished until after 2:30 pm. I had skipped lunch and stopped at Whole Foods to pick up a couple things. Never grocery shop when you're hungry. Once, Ed came home with pop-tarts. Anyway, the "cookie bar" at $12.99/lb. seemed perfectly reasonable - it was almost 3 pm and I only had a waffle for breakfast. Not much better than a pop-tart, I know. When you check out they always ask if you want a receipt. I think that is supposed to save paper, but really I'm sure it's so you don't gasp at how much you just overpaid for food. I solved my problem by saying no thanks to the receipt and happily ate my super expensive cookies on the way home.

30 in 30 Day 23: Tiny Grove

More aspen tree sketches and a pair of simple brown mittens. This tiny grove of aspen was near Rocky Point just outside of Fraser. The leaves are falling quickly.
I'm ready to start a new week. I'll be sewing and painting ... nothing new there.
Have a great week everyone.

30 in 30 Day 22: Purple!!!!!

Hello. My name is Lisa and I am a Netflix binge watcher. I admit this almost guilt-free because
I watch (mostly listen) when I'm sewing. It's how I justify watching a whole series in a day, because I'm also doing something else. Today, while powering out a dozen mittens, I found a Netflix show called "Explained". They are each short, about 15 to 30 minutes long. Topics cover everything from our water shortage, political correctness, diets, weed, cryptocurrency and the overuse of the exclamation point. I highly recommend the show.

I already worry excessively about punctuation rules (because I randomly use colons, dashes, parentheses and ellipsis) and know I'm not following the rules. And, I'm a rule follower. One should never start a sentence with "and" either. I could go on and on ...

30 in 30 Day 21: September Leaves

Yesterday, my buddy Robyn and I headed out to paint and the weather said it was supposed to be in the 70's. As I transferred art gear from my car to hers - I looked at the "winter backpack" that contains all the winter essentials; rain coat, hat, gloves, extra hat, hand warmers. I thought well ... It's supposed to be in the 70's ... I don't need that stuff.

Yep, it was cloudy, in the low 50's and we both were pretty cold after a short time. The sun peaked through occasionally just to taunt us, then a freezing wind would rip away that second of warmth. It's not uncommon to get snow anytime of the year up high in the mountains. We both know better.

Come to think of it, this is the same friend I hiked with in July and was rained and hailed on for the whole descent of the hike. That hurt. I think I had a raincoat that time (maybe??) but from now let's try and remind each other to bring the winter gear. Check out Robyn's beautiful work here.

30 in 30 Day 20: Cupcakes & Cards

I love days like today - my to do list on my calendar said one thing - paint.
You guys know me so well - wishing me painting time and chocolate for my birthday. I'm happy to report that pretty much summed up my day. I drove up CR 50 outside Fraser with a friend and photographed beautiful aspen and painted. In the spirit of birthdays, I'm changing up my mitten and art pairing today. I made these pincushion cupcakes from leftover wool (design credit goes to Betz White for the cupcakes) and they will be a gift for you if you purchase my 2 hand painted cards.
